WHAT IF WE BUILT THE THINGS WE KEEP SAYING ARE MISSING?

MODERN SOCIETY HAS EXTRAORDINARY ACCESS TO INFORMATION AND SURPRISINGLY LITTLE INFRASTRUCTURE FOR ORDINARY HUMAN LIFE. 

People often do not know:

• who to trust;

• how to handle conflict;

• how to ask for help;

• how to offer help without being exploited;

• how to distinguish fact from rumor;

• how to recognize manipulation;

• how to repair relationships;

• how to develop their gifts;

• how to contribute meaningfully;

• how to protect children outside their immediate household;

• how to respond before problems become crises.

People are simultaneously overconnected digitally and underconnected relationally.

THE VILLAGE EXCHANGE

Generosity without ambiguity. Reciprocity without entitlement.

The Village is an experiment in rediscovering:

curiosity, craftsmanship, mentorship, reciprocity, entrepreneurship, fellowship and service.

Different gifts. Same mission.

A real-world network where people of different ages, professions, backgrounds and perspectives can exchange what they know, learn from one another, mentor younger people, build useful things, identify problems worth solving—and occasionally just eat, play and enjoy being around other humans.

To remind ourselves that community isn't something we consume.

It's something we build.

And the people around us know extraordinary things that we rarely take the time to ask about.

No hidden agendas. Put yours on the board.

Every exchange falls into one of three categories.

GIFT

I am giving this freely.

Nothing is secretly owed.

TRADE

We agree to exchange these things.

The agreement is explicit.

FAVOR

Help me with this now and I agree to help you later.

The obligation exists because both parties agreed—not because one person silently expected repayment.

THE TRADERS MARKET

The Village does not create another marketplace where everyone walks around yelling: BUY MY STUFF.

It creates a needs-and-assets marketplace.

Disclaimer: Village Crusaders are people who choose to use their abilities in service of others.

Their purpose is not vigilantism.

It is responsible citizenship.

They may:

• notice when someone is struggling;

• help document concerns;

• connect people with resources;

• volunteer;

• mentor;

• teach;

• organize;

• help protect children;

• support families;

• assist with community projects;

• practice constructive accountability.

Their guiding questions:

What is true?

What is right?

Who needs help?

What am I personally willing to do about it?

OUR COMMON GROUND

Good people know good people. That's how the village grows.

The practical question I continually return to is:

WWJD: What would Jesus do?

For me, that means service before status, truth without cruelty, mercy without abandoning accountability, protection of the vulnerable, courage in the face of wrongdoing, forgiveness where possible, and a willingness to personally carry part of another person’s burden.

Participation in this community does not require sharing religious beliefs.

Our civic common ground is broader.

The Pledge of Allegiance ends with a remarkable promise:

”…with liberty and justice for all.”

Those words mean very little nationally if we cannot practice them locally.

“For all” means the talented kid and the struggling kid.
The popular family and the newcomer.
The coach and the parent.
The volunteer and the person asking for help.
 The person we agree with and the person we don’t.
